Hunting
(July 26, 2010) The last few
months have been quite hot. Not only the temperature
but the wildlife as well. We have captured some
impressive bucks on trail cams lately and are
really looking forward to getting after them this fall. If you haven't gotten your cameras
out yet you are really missing out on some
great velvet action. Bucks will typically put on 1
to 2 inches of antler growth a day this time
of year and have no problems with showing
themselves in soybean fields on most any
evening. So grab your optics and learn some back
roads. It is a really enjoyable way to wind
the day down.
Another species that has
made an impressive comeback the last few years
is the Cottontail. Rabbits have been scarce for the
past several years and most folks sold their
beagles long ago. I have seen some impressive
numbers of them in the last 2 years and will be on
the lookout for some dogs this season.
Squirrel season is opening August 21st and will be
non stop action early and late in the day. The
acorn crop is yet to be determined but I
suspect the drought conditions will probably take a
negative effect. So get that shotgun dusted
off and take a child squirrel hunting. I
guarantee you they will appreciate it and
you will not find a better place to raise a kid than
in the woods or on the water.
Good
Hunting.
